Founded by Trina Brammah, Roots of the Amazon is a tour company based in San Roque de Cumbaza, nestled in the northern highland Amazon jungle. With a deep passion for indigenous preservation and a commitment to the natural environment, Trina’s vision is to offer immersive, transformative experiences that celebrate the land, its people, and their traditions.

Meet Our Local Guides: Our guides come from diverse backgrounds and bring with them a wealth of experience in ecology, conservation, and cultural exchange. They speak multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and Italian, ensuring that visitors from around the world feel welcome and can fully engage with the knowledge and traditions shared during our tours. Having chosen to live a more sustainable and ecologically focused lifestyle in the Amazon, they have gained an intimate understanding of the land, its people, and the need to protect the rainforest.
Rutas Ecosostenibles: An Association Dedicated to Sustainable Travel: The guides at Roots of the Amazon are part of a local association called Rutas Ecosostenibles ("Sustainable Routes"), based in San Roque de Cumbaza. This association is committed to promoting eco-friendly tourism that benefits both the local community and the environment.
By working with Rutas Ecosostenibles, Roots of the Amazon is able to offer tours that are not only immersive and educational but also contribute to the long-term well-being of the region.
Whether you’re trekking through the Cordillera Escalera, exploring indigenous craft-making techniques, or learning about the diverse plant life in the region, our guides will help you connect deeply with the land and the people who have stewarded it for generations. They will translate not just the language, but the essence of the culture, making each journey a transformative experience.

Through their passion for the Amazon and their dedication to its preservation, these guides help create a unique and enriching experience for every traveler. They are not only guides but also educators, storytellers, and caretakers of the land, making each Roots of the Amazon tour a journey of discovery, learning, and deep connection.

Embracing Indigenous Pride: Kichwa Lamista and Chazutino Cultures: Roots of the Amazon places a strong emphasis on indigenous pride, working closely with the Kichwa Lamista and Chazutino cultures. These two indigenous groups have a rich history intertwined with the Amazon.
The Kichwa Lamista are known for chumbe weaving and ceramics, both of which serve as tangible expressions of their cultural heritage and ecological wisdom. A chumbe is a handwoven textile belt, often worn as part of traditional clothing, featuring intricate geometric designs that hold cultural and symbolic significance. Their extensive knowledge of medicinal plants, and ecological agriculture has been passed down through generations, offering a wealth of wisdom to those who seek to learn.
The Chazutino people, native to the Chazuta region are masters of ceramics and chocolate making, they use ancient techniques that preserve their cultural heritage while contributing to modern conservation efforts.

Promoting Organic Agriculture and Ecological Conservation: Every tour is designed to introduce participants to organic agriculture and ecological methods that not only support local livelihoods but actively contribute to the protection of the Amazon rainforest. By promoting forest-friendly farming techniques, Roots of the Amazon combats deforestation and helps ensure that the forest, as well as its indigenous cultures, continue to thrive.

Exploring the Cordillera Escalera: A vast nature reservenear San Roque de Cumbaza that spans 149,870 hectares. This protected area is a biodiversity hotspot, home to rare species like orchids, exotic birds, and endangered mammals such as the spectacled bear. The Cordillera Escalera also serves as an essential watershed, supplying fresh water to local communities and contributing to the greater Amazon River system.
Visitors can experience the untouched beauty of the rainforest by hiking through its pristine trails, discovering waterfalls, and soaking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness.

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve: the largest protected area in Peru, spanning over 20,800 square kilometers. Known as the "jungle of mirrors" for the striking reflections of the sky and forest in its waterways, this reserve is home to an incredible array of wildlife, including pink river dolphins, jaguars, giant river otters, and manatees. The reserve provides an unparalleled opportunity for wildlife observation and environmental education, reinforcing the importance of conservation efforts within the Amazon Basin.

Sustainable Travel and Community Empowerment: We are committed to sustainable travel, offering employment opportunities to local guides, artisans, and farmers. By promoting responsible tourism, the company ensures that the Kichwa Lamista and Chazutino people economically benefit from the preservation of their land and culture. This model helps protect both the forest and the time-honored way of life that has sustained these communities for generations.

Partner Project: Sachaqa Centro de Arte: In addition to running Roots of the Amazon, Trina Brammah is also the founder and director of Sachaqa Centro de Arte, an international artist residency program based in San Roque de Cumbaza. Sachaqa offers a unique space where artists from around the world can engage in ecological art practices and learn from local cultures.
The residency emphasizes sustainable creative methods, encouraging artists to use natural pigments, clay, and other local materials. Residents often collaborate with artisans from the Kichwa Lamista and Chazutino communities, further strengthening the bond between art, nature, and indigenous knowledge.

Together, Roots of the Amazon and Sachaqa Centro de Arte form complementary projects with a shared vision: fostering environmental conservation and cultural preservation. While Sachaqa focuses on the creative exploration of sustainability, Roots of the Amazon takes participants on an immersive journey into the ecological practices and ancestral wisdom of the indigenous peoples.
Learning from the Indigenous Guardians of the Amazon we encourages visitors to embrace a spirit of investigation—to seek out and learn from the indigenous people of the Amazon. Whether it's gaining knowledge of ancient agricultural techniques, exploring the spiritual significance of certain plants, or appreciating the resilience of these cultures, every tour is an opportunity to deepen one's connection to both the land and its people.

Together, we can learn from the indigenous guardians of the Amazon and take part in the global movement toward a more sustainable, respectful, and harmonious relationship with our environment.
Welcome to Roots of the Amazon, where each adventure is a celebration of nature, culture, and community, ensuring that both the rainforest and its people flourish for generations to come
